The rumour that Cody Gakpo is on his way to Arsenal continues to circulate.

Arsenal was said to be in pole position to sign the attacker who is presently playing for PSV Eindhoven a few months ago.

Although there has lately been some exciting new information, the path has become a little chilly.

According to Caught Offside, the Gunners are in “early” talks with the 23-year-old star regarding the likelihood of him joining them in North London when the summer transfer window opens.

The player won the Golden Shoe title in the Eredivisie the previous season after an exceptional season in which he scored 21 goals and assisted on another 15 in all competitions.

Having a hand in 36 goals, despite the fact that it is merely the top level of competition in the Netherlands, is a remarkable return and a terrific demonstration of his attacking ability.

Due to Kieran Tierney’s injury problems over the last three years since joining Arsenal from Celtic, Caught Offside reports that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has enquired about deploying the player as a left defender. Because of the player’s flexibility and ability to play in a number of positions, this is the case.

You can’t help but wonder whether this will jeopardise Arsenal’s chances of getting the star to the Emirates Stadium.

It’s crucial to remember that, despite being the overwhelming favourite to finish among the top four clubs in the Premier League moving into the final stretch of the season, this is a team that has recently missed out on qualifying for the Champions League.

That will not have aided Arsenal’s aspirations to acquire a new player this summer, and shifting Gakpo’s position will not persuade him to book his first flight to London.

The rumour that Arteta is contemplating playing him on the left side of the defence has some validity to it, but it’s also likely that this isn’t the case.

Tierney’s injury record is, to put it nicely, patchy, and with Nuno Tavares proving to be a poor understudy to the Scotland international player during the previous season – which was also Tavares’ debut in the Premier League – the Spanish manager has every reason to desire another left-back.

The question of whether it’s Gakpo or not is a distinct one.
