Arsenal and Tottenham are reportedly being offered the chance to sign Barcelona’s starting centre defender Clement Lenglet. This will create a transfer market battle between the two teams.

The Catalan club wants to get rid of the Frenchman to make place for Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen, who is expected to arrive at the Camp Nou in the coming days. There have been rumours that Antonio Conte is looking to enhance his defence by bringing in Lenglet, who is a naturally left-footed centre defender. These rumours began to circulate earlier this week.

According to Catalunya Radio, Lenglet has accepted that he will not be a part of Xavi’s plans for the first-team squad next season and has agreed to look into his possibilities for leaving the club this summer. Tottenham was the first team to inquire about the move, and Daniel Levy seems to be willing to foot the bill for the player’s high wages. Barcelona is interested in loaning the 26-year-old to Tottenham Hotspur for a two-year deal.

The Times has reported, through TEAMtalk, that Arsenal has been contacted with the same option, and that Mikel Arteta is now being offered the chance to hijack the deal being discussed by the Gunners’ biggest rivals, Chelsea. With European competition about to resume next season, the Spanish manager hopes to make significant additions to his team’s lineup.

“What we want to do is improve the team and the squad,” Arteta said of his summer plans back in May. “There’s not a player that can’t improve. We want to retain our best players for sure and add quality and depth.

“We have to be prepared for when we’re going to do that [keep players] and why. We can control those timings. Sometimes it’s inevitable but we want to maintain our best players.”
