Arsenal are close to signing Sao Paulo’s talented Brazilian prospect Marquinhos, continuing the club’s evident priority on nurturing young players.

Marquinhos, 19, debuted for the senior team in July and has made 39 appearances, scoring four goals and assisting three. His preferred position is on the right wing, where he can cut inside into his better-left foot.

While Marquinhos’ contract at Sao Paulo expires in two years, Arsenal beat other European heavyweights to the teen’s signature. The Gunners will pay €3.5m (£3m) for the attacker, according to Brazilian publication Globo Esporte.

Marquinhos earned his first professional contract at the age of 16, indicating his promising future. But he won’t be strutting his stuff at the Emirates next season, according to Sport Witness, as Arsenal want to loan him out to a Spanish team.

Marquinhos will need to impress his new boss, Mikel Arteta, throughout pre-season if he wants to join the Gunners team so soon. Arsenal reportedly sees Marquinhos as a 2019 Gabriel Martinelli.

The attacker joined the North London club from Ituano for £6million and has since established himself in Arteta’s first squad. The Gunners leadership thought Martinelli was ready to join the team immediately rather than needing a loan to improve.

The 20-year-old has five goals and two assists in 27 Premier League outings this season. He got his senior Brazil debut in March as a reward for his excellent season and has two years left on his Arsenal contract with an option to extend to 2025.

Arsenal are anticipated to buy a seasoned centre-forward as well as young youngsters with promise. Arteta will be seriously lacking alternatives upfront if Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah opt out this summer.
