Inter Milan hit Arsenal with double transfer blow as Edu looks to seal £22.5m deal for German

The future of Bernd Leno at Arsenal remains a topic of much discussion since the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United.

The England international took just a few weeks to claim the number one spot from Leno. The former Bayer Leverkusen stopper has been the number one since superseding Petr Cech to the spot.

However, Leno has always been open about the possibility of leaving the club, most recently claiming a new adventure would interest him.

In February of this year he said, “I know that I still have two years left on my contract and I’m also 29. For a goalkeeper, that’s not too old. I’ve still got some years to go.

“I’m very happy at the club. I don’t know what will come in the future, but I’m open to everything. Maybe for a new adventure or to stay at Arsenal. Like I said, I don’t think about my future because two years is a long time. At the moment there are no conversations with the club or anything else.”

Tuttosport claimed that Inter Milan could look to Leno as a long-term replacement for the ageing Samir Handanovic.

Leno’s contract is nearing its conclusion and therefore Inter could get him at a cut-price deal in one of the two winter windows or the 2022 summer transfer period.

However, this now looks unlikely as the Nerazzurri have identified a new target of which the Gunners had previously considered to replace Leno himself.

Ajax stopper Andre Onana was linked with a move to Arsenal in the early stages of the previous summer window. Goal reported that a deal could be done for around £7 million.

The decrease in price is due to a current ban on the player imposed due to a breach of doping regulations. Onana appealed the decision, and the sentence was reduced meaning he could be available to register for a side during the January window.

Andre Onana was a target of Arsenal but looks likely to switch Ajax for Inter Milan instead.

However, Arsenal instead wanted to move for a homegrown keeper and in came Ramsdale. Yet, with the future of Leno still uncertain, it is likely Arsenal have begun to consider possible replacements to compete with the former Blades keeper.

Onana, having previously interested the Gunners, would have made a savvy and small investment. It therefore being unsurprising to see Onana linked for a move to Italy.

Arsenal however would surely be superseded by Inter who can offer Onana not only a starting place in the team once Handanovic leaves but also Champions League football.

Mikel Arteta and Edu will have to turn their attention to somebody else.
