Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly thinking about changing Folarin Balogun’s playing position, according to All Nigeria Soccer.
The 19-year-old striker is one of the most highly-rated players to come through the Hale End ranks in recent years.
In April, Balogun signed a new long-term deal at Arsenal, bringing months of speculation over his future to an end.
Now, Arteta is reportedly looking to next season with an eye on the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nicolas Pepe is likely to be on international duty with Ivory Coast for at least three weeks.
Therefore, the Arsenal boss is apparently looking to develop a new system to cover for Pepe and also ensure Balogun gets ample game time.
All Nigeria Soccer says Balogun has featured mostly as a left-sided winger in Arsenal’s training sessions during pre-season.
He also played on the left wing in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Rangers last weekend, in contrast to his usual centre-forward position.
All Nigeria Soccer notes this is the same role that Chelsea star Timo Werner used to play at RB Leipzig before permanently switching to centre-forward.
The plan would be for Balogun to cut in the left and find space behind the full-backs, suggested the outlet.
Arsenal’s Premier League campaign gets under way at Brentford on August 13.
