Jose Mourinho has lined up his man, and he is refusing to look elsewhere.
The latest reports from Italy suggest the newly-appointed Roma boss remains intent on signing Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka despite seeing his first bid rejected.
To this end, Mourinho and Stadio Olimpico chiefs are understood to have altered their approach with a view to getting a deal for Xhaka over the line.
Elsewhere, Mikel Arteta’s hopes of providing back-up for Kieran Tierney have received a blow, with two priority left-back targets appearing unlikely to join the Gunners this summer.
There are also reports from France claiming Marseille are readying themselves for a bold double raid on the Emirates. The Ligue 1 club are believed to be targeting two players who are somewhat out of favour under Arteta, but could still command considerable transfer fees.
Here is Monday’s Arsenal transfer round-up to kick-off your week.
Roma’s fresh approach for Xhaka
Roma have not been put off by recent setbacks in their pursuit of Granit Xhaka and have devised a new approach for the Arsenal midfielder, according to reports in Italy.
Jose Mourinho is keen to make Xhaka one of his first signings as Roma boss but his first bid for the Switzerland international was reportedly rejected.
Rather than identifying an alternative target, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Stadio Olimpico chiefs could use one or two of their current players in a part-exchange deal.
The Italian outlet claims Amadou Diawara and Cengiz Under are under consideration to be used in an offer for Xhaka.
Arteta’s left-back hopes dented
Mikel Arteta’s hopes of adding a left-back to his squad this summer have been dented.
That’s according to football.london , which claims Gunners target Ryan Bertrand is edging closer to joining Leicester City.
Bertrand is available for free due to his contract with Southampton expiring, but the King Power appears to be his most likely destination rather than the Emirates.
Meanwhile, the outlet also claims Hibernian starlet Josh Doig is unlikely to capitalise on recent transfer links by joining Arsenal.
Doig signed a new four-year deal with Hibs in February and won the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year award this season.
Marseille plot double swoop
Marseille are planning an audacious raid on the Emirates with two of Arsenal’s French stars in their sights, according to L’Equipe .
The Gunners are believed to be willing to part ways with numerous players this summer in order to raise transfer funds.
The report from France claims the Ligue 1 club are keen to sign Matteo Guendouzi, who spent the season on loan at Hertha Berlin after falling out with Mikel Arteta.
Guendouzi is said to have agreed terms with Jorge Sampaoli’s side, who will now sit down at the negotiating table with Arsenal to complete the transfer.
Marseille are also believed to be keen on William Saliba, whose future with the Gunners is also unclear after spending the campaign with Nice.
