Some Arsenal fans think Arteta’s about to recall £220k-a-week player today

Some Arsenal fans on Twitter think that Mikel Arteta’s about to bring Willian back into his first XI for the trip to Leicester City this afternoon.

Winning the Europa League is now the Gunners’ priority this season.

Arsenal are 11th in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of the top four, meaning that winning Europe’s secondary competition is the most likely route into the Champions League next term.

Mikel Arteta’s side produced a heroic effort to reach the last 16 of the competition on Thursday by beating Benfica 3-2 on the night.

It was a masterclass from Bukayo Saka once again and the 19-year-old enhanced his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young teenagers with two brilliant assists for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But Arteta has since admitted that he’s going to need to rest the teenager in the near future to avoid burning him out, with Saka playing the equivalent of almost 28 full games this season.

The North Londoners have a clash away to Leicester today and some Arsenal fans believe that the unpopular Willian – who also got an assist in Athens during the week – is set to be rotated into the first XI.

Willian, who earns £220,000 per week at Arsenal, has had a fairly disappointing season, setting up four goals and scoring none since his Bosman move last summer.

The 32-year-old hasn’t started a Premier League game under Arteta since before Christmas, but that could and probably will change today.
