Fabrizio Romano has told The Arsenal Lounge that he believes Arsenal will go back in for Houssem Aouar in the January transfer window.
Arsenal pushed hard for Aouar in the summer, but were ultimately unable to strike a deal with Lyon.
The Gunners, instead, pushed on with the signing of Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid to strengthen their midfield.
However, with Arsenal still struggling in an attacking sense, there is a real feeling that Mikel Arteta’s badly need a creative influence in the middle of the park.
And Romano has suggested that Arsenal may well make a bid for Aouar, if they fail to land Dominik Szoboszlai from Red Bull Salzburg.
“I think they will try again for sure,” he said. “Now we have to happen what will happen with Szoboszlai, they are waiting on his final decision.
“But immediately after Szoboszlai signs with another club, they could move again for Aouar. They have already spoke with his agent.
“It is not easy to sign Aouar in January, but he is at the top of the list for Arsenal. He’s a favourite for Arteta, it’s the same for the board. So, yes, in my opinion they will try again.”
Lyon were demanding £40 million for Aouar in the summer (France Football), but whether their asking price has come down now remains to be seen.
Aouar has been in solid form this season, with Lyon actually sat level on points with PSG at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
There must also be questions over whether Aouar would actually consider a move to Arsenal now, after their poor start to the season.
The 22-year-old may want European football, and it is looking increasingly unlikely that Arsenal will make it into the Champions League or Europa League unless their results dramatically improve in the near future.
