Mikel Arteta responds to Arsene Wenger’s remarks about Mesut Ozil being ‘wasted’ at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has responded to Arsene Wenger after he defended Mesut Ozil.

The legendary manager said the German is being ‘wasted’ at Arsenal, where he has not played this season.

Ozil has been left out of the club’s Europa League squad and reports have emerged that the same fate awaits him for the Premier League squad as well.

It is a dramatic decline for the playmaker, who was hailed as a game-changing signing when he joined in 2013.

And the man that signed him, Wenger, has bemoaned Ozil’s ostracisation from the squad.

When asked about his situation, Wenger said: “I feel it is a waste for him.

“Firstly because he’s in the years where a player of his talent can produce the most.

“And it’s a waste for the club as well because he’s a super talent, a creative talent that in the final third can create that killer pass.”

And now Arteta has responded to the Frenchman, who he also played under at the Emirates.

The former Everton midfielder said: “I think you have to try to find a way to fit every player with their own qualities.

“This is our job and this is our responsibility with all the players we have to manage.”

When pressed on his decision to exclude Ozil from the Europa League, Arteta insisted it was a difficult decision.

“Well he wasn’t the only one who’s not in the squad,” he said.

“It was a really difficult decision for me to make because to leave players out of the squad at that level where they know they cannot get involved is really tough.

“I don’t like it at all but the decision has to be made because we have a limit on foreign players and unfortunately we have to make that decision.”

Arsenal face Manchester City this weekend in an early test for Arteta’s men, though they have triumphed over them during his short reign already.

The pressure is actually more on Pep Guardiola, whose side have blown hot and cold in the early stages of the season.
