Spanish outlet Libertad Digital have claimed that Arsenal are willing to pay the £42million release clause to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey in the summer, though his representatives are in talks over a new Atleti deal.
Partey, 26, is considered as one of Diego Simeone’s most important players after breaking through Atleti’s youth academy to clock up 172 senior appearances for his side. He has scored 15 goals from the base of the midfield in that time.
A 20-time Ghana international, Partey is renowned for his lung-busting stamina and quick turn of pace in the middle of the park. He can play more advanced than holding midfield, but is naturally best in front of the defence.
The report claims an offer from Arsenal is on the table and The Gunners have spoken to Partey’s agents – with the north London side willing to match Partey’s release clause. However, Partey’s agents are also in talks with Atleti over a new deal.
Can Arsenal persuade Partey to leave his boyhood club?
Joining Atleti as an 18-year-old in 2012, Partey has remained at the club since – playing for the club’s youth sides, reserve team and now 172 times under Simeone. It will therefore be difficult to tempt him to try something new.
But if Partey is to try something different in his career, this summer is probably the best time to move. Certainly, he is at the top of his game and moving now will see him linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs – such as Arsenal.
A lack of Champions League football, though, may prove detrimental in Arsenal’s hunt for Partey.
