Arsenal are yet to make a major signing in the January transfer window.
Mikel Arteta’s side linked to a number of players as the new head coach looks to mould the team in his own way.
But who could be arriving before the end of the season?
One name that has been linked is a little-known Brazilian midfielder called Bruno Guimaraes.
Arsenal are said to have scouted the player and are in talks about a possible move – but reportedly face competition from a number of European clubs.
Here’s what we know about his future so far.
Who is Bruno Guimaraes?
Guimaraes is a 22-year-old midfielder who plays for Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense.
The central midfielder was born in Rio de Janeiro and moved to his current club from Gremio Osasco Audax in May 2017.
Guimaraes made 35 appearances in all competitions during the 2019 season, scoring four goals and providing three assists.
He captained the team on one occasion, wearing the armband in a 1-0 loss against Palmeiras back in June.
He has one cap for Brazil’s U23 team, playing 21 minutes of the team’s 3-2 defeat against Japan back in October.
Portuguese side Benfica are the first to make a move for the 22-year-old.
It was thought that Benfica’s interest had cooled, having recently signed Julian Weigl for €20million, but the Portuguese team are not willing to stop there.
Athletico Paranaense president Mario Celso Petraglia told Portuguese publication O Jogo, as reported by the Metro : “Yes it’s true. Yesterday came the official offer from Benfica to sign Bruno Guimaraes.
“‘Let’s study Benfica’s offer. On Monday we will meet the club board to assess this situation.”
Arsenal interest confirmed
But Paranaense are readying themselves for another offer – from Arsenal.
The Gunners, under new head coach Mikel Arteta, are looking for reinforcements and young Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli has already shown how fruitful a move to the Premier League can be.
But the Gunners are not expected to make their move until the summer transfer window.
Petraglia added: “Arsenal are interested, but will only make an offer towards the end of the season.”
The Gunners are not the only club in England to have scouted the Brazilian youngster though.
Chelsea have also sent scouts to watch the Brazilian in action, while Atletico Madrid are also reported to have a keen interest in the player.
What has the player said?
The player spoke about his future and a possible move away from his club back in September.
“The interest of other teams, I see that it’s normal when the person has been playing well,” he said, as reported by the Mirror .
“I leave that in the hands of my agents. I’m happy at Athletico and focused on the final.”
The Portuguese club have moved one step closer to signing Guimaraes, according to journalist Bruno Andrade.
The journalist claims that the player has already said ‘yes’ to Benfica over a transfer in January, with him wishing to make the move during the winter window.
It is claimed that Benfica have made an offer of around £17million with £4.3m in add ons, with his club holding out for a fee closer to £21 million.
Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are said to be keeping an eye on the situation.
