Liverpool could be thrown out of the Carabao Cup if they are found to have fielded an ineligible player in their third-round victory over MK Dons.

The Athletic can exclusively reveal that the EFL have launched an investigation after it emerged one of the Liverpool players involved in Wednesday’s 2-0 win may not have satisfied the registration criteria to feature in the competition.

Victory set up a home tie with Arsenal at Anfield next month but Liverpool’s continued involvement in this season’s Carabao Cup is now in doubt.

A Liverpool spokesman told The Athletic: “The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players.

“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

If it is proven that Liverpool broke competition rules then the EFL must decide whether to issue a fine or throw.
